Thank you, Chris Columbus

If you have today off from work or school...

you have
Christopher Columbus
to thank.

And you’re probably doing a
hap, hap, happy dance
for the long weekend.

I remember being taught in elementary school
that Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492.

Who could forget the rhyme that was drilled into our heads?

“In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue.”

But in reality,
when Columbus and the
Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria
landed in the New World...
it was not America they discovered.
It was the Bahamas.

Inhabitants were already living on the island...
welcoming Christopher Columbus,
like a Walmart greeter:

"Hey, mon.
How may I help you?"

Let’s also not overlook the fact
that the Vikings
had already explored the North American coast
500 years
before Columbus.

 (so, what’s in your wallet?)

Anywhoooo......

I don’t want to take any thunder from
Christopher Columbus’s accomplishments.

To sail across the Atlantic in a wooden boat,
without a deck pool or boat drinks,
is a big darn deal.

PLUS, it is extremely impressive that Columbus
managed to get a 3-day weekend put on our calendar.

ALAS...

We can't thank you enough,
Christopher Columbus
for discovering the Bahamas.

"No problem, mon."
